It is always a privilege and a joy for the catechists to accompany the children as they prepare to receive the beautiful gift of these two Sacraments.
Preparation for First Communion begins already in the Level I atrium (ages 3-6) with presentations on the gestures and prayers of the Mass, The Last Supper, and the Mystery of the Eucharist.
In Level II (ages 6-9) the children continue to work with the same material and are introduced to the structure of the Mass in more detail. At this age they are also open to moral formation.
Children, who are in their second year of Level II or Level III, or a combination thereof, are invited to participate in more specific sacramental preparation. This preparation consists of five additional meditations (classes) and a retreat. During the five meditations we reflect together on the Parable of the True Vine and three parables of mercy: The Found Sheep, The Found Coin, and The Forgiving Father (The Prodigal Son). These parables provide a gentle, non-threatening way to introduce the child to God’s infinite mercy and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Through them we come to know Jesus’ desire that we always abide in Him and never remain separated from Him.
The retreat is a relaxed time for the children to withdraw from their normal routines and to grow closer to God before they receive these Sacraments. It is not an overnight retreat and the children do return home each day.
