Sacramental Preparation through Catechesis of the Good Shepherd
Catechesis of the Good Shepherd offers the child a long and rich preparation for becoming a full member of the Catholic Church.
Preparation begins in the Level I atrium (ages 3-6) with presentations on the essentials of the Mass and the institution of the Mass by Jesus at the Last Supper. Central to the child of this age are the words of Jesus, “I am the Good Shepherd.” The Good Shepherd calls his sheep by name into a covenant relationship in which he lays down his life so they may have abundant life. The Mass is a time in which he calls his sheep to gather so he may give them his life in a most particular way.
In Level II (ages 6-9) more and more details are added to the presentations on the Mass. The children are now aware of time, history, and geography, the institution of the Mass is shown to be a Mass for all people of all times. They are also developing a moral sense and study maxims of Jesus and moral parables in preparation for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Children being prepared for Confirmation will work on materials that focus on the gifts of that sacrament.
Children being prepared for First Confession will meet for four weekly sessions in addition to the atrium sessions.
Children being prepared for Confirmation and First Communion will meet for a three day retreat in the week preceding Confirmation.
