Welcome to Sacred Heart of Mary's religious education! We offer a variety of programs for all ages! If your children are in elementary school then you're in the right place. We refer to our elementary religious education program as CCD. CCD stands for Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, an association established in Rome in 1562 for the purpose of giving religious instruction. All Catholic churches offer CCD or religious education classes for their children who do not attend Catholic school. Here are some specifics about the CCD program here at SHM.
- We meet Tuesday or Wednesday afternoons from 4:15 – 5:45 PM.
- We offer classes for children in first through fifth grade.
- We rely on the generosity of volunteer catechists to teach the classes. If you are interested in volunteering, please give Kerri Maxwell a call.
- We begin the last week of September and run through the end of April. Click here to see the schedule for upcoming school year.
- We are currently using the Sadlier, We Believe series to instruct the children. Each grade level focuses on a different aspect of the Catholic faith, while reinforcing doctrine learned in the previous years.
- Year 1 – God Loves Us. First year CCD focuses on meeting the family of God. They learn about the three persons of God, basic Bible stories, and focus on the prayers – Angel of God, and Our Father. First year CCD is required for all children before they enter year 2.
- Year 2 – Jesus Shares God's Life. During the second year, students focus on receiving the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist. They prepare for Reconciliation in the Fall and Eucharist in the Spring. This is a big year!
- Year 3 – We Are the Church. In the third year the children focus on the Church and the Mass. They also get their first opportunity to serve at Mass by choosing to read, usher, or server during their class's Mass. To see a schedule of Children's Masses, please click here.
- Year 4 – We Live God's Laws. In fourth year the children learn the Ten Commandments. They also learn the Beatitudes and the Works of Mercy.
- Year 5 – We Meet Jesus in the Sacraments. This final CCD year is spent learning more about the seven sacraments. The children learn the symbols and meaning of each sacrament.
Our one-and-a-half hour class time is spent praying, learning the chapter, doing crafts, acting out Bible stories, sharing faith, and singing. Children have a 15 minute music class where they spend time singing Mass songs, praise songs, and having fun with God in song. Each year the students in grade 3 – 5 are responsible for a family Mass with their class. During the preparation for this Mass the children choose to be readers, servers, or ushers and they practice for their chosen role. This not only gets the children involved in Mass, but also teaches them, and often their families, more about what it means to be Catholic.
